SILVER Years Ballet was launched four years ago for the older generation. There are now classes across Hertforshire and Essex, with one of the original classes being held in Old Harlow.

The classes have proved beneficial to the many ladies and gents that take part, with improvements in flexibility, balance, core strength and posture.

It’s a very gentle exercise, it’s not strenuous on the knees and hips. We always speak to the students when they come, and find out if they have any injuries. We are also a community group always finishing the lesson with tea/coffee and biscuits, the perfect way to meet new friends.

Sessions are now up and running in Hoddesdon , Sawbridgeworth, Ware, Bishops Stortford and Stanstead Abbotts. Classes last for 45 minutes and are followed by tea, biscuits and a chat.

“Quite a few doctors recommend it. We have a gentleman, and he comes because his orthopedist suggested it.

“The classes are tailored for the older generation. The oldest lady is well into her 80s, and she manages it.

“There is a lot of socialising. A few of these ladies are widowed, and it’s a way of meeting people. They have really got to know each other.”

One of the dancers, Veronica Rocker, makes the 90-minute round trip to East Herts each week from her Enfield home.
The 68-year-old said: “I absolutely love it.
“It’s something I have never done before. When it was suggested, I thought I would give it a go.
“It works wonders. My flexibility is much better, 4 years ago i couldn’t bend down”

“When we finish, we come together and have a laugh.

“I keep Wednesday afternoons free now. I wouldn’t do anything else.”
