LABOUR’S candidate to be Essex PFCC, Chris Vince, has slammed the Tory government for ‘yet again letting down the victims of crime’, by voting against proposals for a national register of serial stalkers and domestic abusers, and has called upon his opponents to support a change in the law, if elected on May 6th.
‘Time after time, this Tory Government has let down the victims of crime. After the appalling murder of Sarah Everard, they briefed that they’d support a change to the law.’
The Home Secretary, so often asleep on the job, previously said “There is something about perpetrators and their serial offending that has to be addressed. There is no question about that at all … I will be very candid: we will look at all measures.”
‘The Tory record on law and order is frankly criminal, and this further betrayal of those suffering domestic abuse, and those living in fear from stalkers, emphasises just why I’ve pledged to change the role of the Deputy PFCC to work closely with charities and local groups to tackle violence against women. The present system, that the Tories seem desperate to hang in to, is broken.
A register of those convicted of domestic abuse would have been a useful addition to the law, and has not only attracted the support of many groups working to reduce and eradicate violence against women, such as Women’s Aid, but was supported by 250,000 people nationwide, who signed a petition calling on the Tories to change the law. Tragically, survivors safety doesn’t seem to be a priority for the government, and I call upon my opponents to be Essex PFCC to pledge to campaign to change the law if elected.’
