There are few things better than summer in the UK, and this is a great time for hitting the road and having all kinds of adventures. This could include trips to the beach, road trips, and seeing loved ones in different parts of the country. Spending a lot of time on the road can take its toll on your tyres, which is why it is important to know how to get your tyres ready for summer adventures. Keep reading to find out how.

Inspect Tread Depth

First, you should check the tread depth of each tyre to ensure that they are legal and will provide enough traction and prevent hydroplaning (rain can still be an issue in summer!). The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but it is recommended that you change your tyres once they reach 3mm for safety. You can test with a 20p coin by inserting it into the groove – if you can’t see the outer band, your tyres are above the legal limit.

Check Tyre Pressure

You should also check the tyre pressure regularly and always before a long drive. The pressure can affect the handling and fuel efficiency, and optimum pressure will reduce the chance of a blowout. You can use a pressure gauge to check the pressure (ideally when the tyres are cold) and find the recommended pressure in the vehicle manual or on the sticker on the driver’s side door. Check each tyre (including the spare) and inflate/deflate to the correct pressure before hitting the road.

Assess Tyre Age

Tyres degrade over time even if they have not been used, so you need to keep an eye on the age and replace your car tyres once they are over six years old (regardless of tread depth and overall condition.

Look for Tyre Damage

You should also inspect each tyre for signs of damage, including cuts, cracks, bulges, and blisters. The summer heat can exacerbate existing damage, which could lead to tyre failure and unsafe driving. Be sure to remove any stones, nails, or other debris lodged in the tread, as these could cause a puncture. Additionally, pull over and check your tyres if you ever hit a pothole as these can cause damage.

Rotate Your Tyres

Finally, it is a good idea to rotate your tyres every 8,000 to 10,000km. This is because tyres wear at different rates depending on their position, so rotating prevents uneven wear and prolongs the life of your set.

These are the main steps to take to look after your tyres in the summer months. Summer is a great season for adventures, but you must always make sure that your tyres are road-ready and in the best condition to ensure that you can get to your destination safely and efficiently.
