MORE than 80 passengers had a memorable journey aboard the Summer Memory Train on Wednesday 10 July.

This special day trip was organised for residents in the district living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment to enjoy with a friend, family member or carer.

The passengers enjoyed a trip from North Weald to Ongar, round the forest and back on the Epping Ongar Railway, complete with entertainment and a delicious lunch. The free event provided an opportunity for travellers to reminisce, soak in the beautiful views of the district’s countryside, and learn from the knowledgeable volunteers of the railway.

One passenger said:

All staff were great and we loved listening to the travel takes of George the railway guard. It was great to see Kath and Fred openly discussing their Alzheimer’s together in a mutually supportive way. I have some new strong memories to take home.

Another added:

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for today, my husband and I so enjoyed the Memory Train, it was so nice to see him smiling and enjoying the day.
EFDC Chairman, Cllr Les Burrows who attended the event, said:

The memory train is a great concept, providing a unique opportunity for those affected by dementia to bond with their loved ones.

The collaboration between local organisations showcases the value of community partnerships in creating meaningful experiences. It was a joy to explore the train and engage in conversations with both caregivers and individuals living with dementia.
