Letter to editor – it’s time to Listen up and Speak up

Lifestyle / Wed 31st Jul 2024 at 07:13am

Dear editor,

WE know that many adults are worried about what they should do when they witness child abuse. Earlier this year the NSPCC released data from a YouGov survey, where 373 adults from the East of England took part. This data revealed that almost a third of these adults (32%) said they had concerns a child may be experiencing abuse or neglect, and one in five of these adults (19%) who had a concern said they did not take action.

It’s vital that people within our communities do whatever they can to support children and feel able to take action when a child is suffering. Our Listen up, Speak up campaign helps adults recognise the signs of abuse and know how to respond if they witness it or a child speaks out.

From August to December the NSPCC Local Campaigns Team in the East of England is offering free interactive workshops to help support our local communities with this growing issue. We want to enable people to feel confident in their ability to react and report abuse and feel safe in the knowledge that the NSPCC will support them and any child who needs us.

The following dates are available to attend these FREE workshops virtually on Zoom:
Monday 19th August at 6pm
Thursday 26th September at 7pm
Thursday 24th October at 7pm
Thursday 14th November at 1pm
Tuesday 10th December at 6pm

If you would like to find out more about the campaign simply search ‘NSPCC Listen up, Speak up’.

Sincerely,
Emma-Louise Copperwheat, NSPCC Local Campaigns Officer for the East of England
