Health / Fri 2nd Aug 2024 at 08:01am

STAN Newens (who passed away in 2021) was Harlow’s MP from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1983. He also was a founder member of Harlow Health Centres Trust and served for many years, and in both roles contributed significantly to Harlow’s health and wellbeing. The Harlow Health Centres Trust is very pleased to name this bursary in recognition of Stan’s contribution to Harlow, and as a means of opening up access to Higher Education, to those who might otherwise be excluded because of cost.

Harlow Health Centres Trust is the charity which holds in trust and manages the Health Centres originally provided for the new town by the Nuffield Foundation Trust. It manages Harlow’s GP surgery buildings and distributes charitable funding into the local health and wellbeing community. As part of that mission, it is now launching the Stan Newens bi-annual bursary to support local residents pursue a higher-level university course.

You must meet the following criteria to be able to apply for a bursary:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to apply
  • You must be in genuine financial need (meaning: ‘When someone is unable to afford a course and has reached out and explored other options’)
  • You must be local to Harlow and wanting to study your course here
  • You must not have started your course yet
  • The course chosen must fit in line with the trusts ethos to promote health and
wellbeing which will be of interest or benefit to the Harlow community
  • Have not been successful in this bursary application previously

The grants / bursary panel are also keen to see evidence that applicants have thought about the employment opportunities available and possible career routes. Bursary recipients will be required to keep in touch with the Grants committee team to help us evaluate the impact of receiving a bursary, so we can continue to support those in need.

Purpose
