THE all-weather racing action continues at Chelmsford this week with a six-race card at the track on Thursday.

Racing gets underway at 6.30pm with a restricted novice stakes in class five before rounding off at 9.00pm as seven runners take on the five furlong handicap.

The opening contest of the evening (6.30) sees a field of six take on the one mile restricted novice stakes for horses aged between three and five. Fibonacci Sequence stacks up the best here in what is a weak-looking race, fourth at Wolverhampton on debut 30 days ago and is open to improvement stepping up in trip here for trainer George Scott.

An eight-runner mile handicap marks race two on Chelmsford’s card at 7.00 in class six for horses aged four and upwards. Meng Tian returned to form for trainer Sean Woods when third at Lingfield last time out just under three weeks ago and is in the frame again here, while the aforementioned trainer Scott could bag a quickfire double to open up the card with Cariad, a previous course and distance winner who is lurking on an enticing mark off a fifth of 11 in a Nottingham contest on her last outing.

A small field of five will head to the stalls for race three on Chelmsford’s card (7.30) which is the feature race of the evening, the Weatherbys Chelmsford city Cup Handicap and a cool £20,936 heading the way of the winner. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Never So Brave looks the one to beat here, not seen to best effect since scoring at Chester earlier this season but certainly remains with potential to get back to winning ways. Alzahir rates the main threat from the David O’Meara yard, a good fourth in a Newmarket handicap on his last run.

Dubawi Time appeals most in race four of the evening (8.00) as eight runners take on the one mile and six furlong handicap in class six. William Knight’s three-year-old was a winner at Kempton back in February and a good second of 12 at Leicester on his last run, so rates a big player here off the same mark. Apostle makes just her second start in handicaps and is one to note for trainer Sir Mark Prescott.

The penultimate race of the evening (8.30) is an eight-runner classified stakes in class six for horses aged three and older, with preference here heading the way of Doves Of Peace, who didn’t show much improvement to win a nine-runner minor event at this track 16 days ago quite comfortable ahead of the re-opposing War Zone, with the former taken to get the better of the latter once again.

Finally, the card comes to a close with the seven-runner handicap in class six for three-year-old’s (9.00). The Phillip McEntee-trained Chiedozie gets the nod here, returning to some form with a second of seven in a Lingfield handicap on his last spin. Of his rivals, Dusk Dame rates the chief threat having scored at Ffos Las last time out when dropping down in grade and has a good shout again here despite carrying a penalty for that Welsh success.
