Local MPs welcome billion pound investment into Stansted Airport

Business / Thu 17th Oct 2024 at 12:03pm

ON Monday 14th October, Stansted Airport revealed more details of their five-year £1.1bn investment programme that will help us to deliver a wide range of benefits to passengers and help them secure links to more destinations around the world.

The centrepiece of their plans is a landmark £600m extension to the airport’s existing terminal, which will create a bright spacious environment, with more seating areas plus new shops, bars
and restaurants to give travellers even more choice than they have today.

The 16,500m2 terminal development will help the airport serve up to 43 million passengers a year, which in turn will create up to 5,000 new on-site jobs and see the airport’s economic contribution double to £2 billion annually. The more spacious departure lounge will feature additional
seating, a greater choice of shops, bars and restaurants, and a larger security hall with more security lanes equipped with next-generation scanners. The extension will also provide more state-of-the-art check-in desks plus increased baggage capacity.

Chris Vince MP said:

When standing for election, I wanted to bring in sustained investment into Harlow to bring about tangible change for our town and the surrounding villages. This is a clear act of confidence
in this Labour government, showing the Airport’s trust to bring this investment into Stansted and the area.

Stansted is a major employer in Harlow, and a major airport for many of Harlow’s residents that use it for business and for leisure. This investment stands to not only improve the experience of Stansted, but will deliver more jobs, more confidence, and more investment to Harlow.

I welcome this investment and look forward to seeing the improvements for residents across Harlow and its surrounding villages.

Josh Dean MP said:

My mission as the MP for Hertford and Stortford is to make our community an even better place to live, work and learn. Sitting on our town’s doorstep, Stansted Airport is a major employer in Bishop’s Stortford and surrounding areas, and many of our young people benefit from opportunities to study vocational courses at Stansted Airport College.

I therefore welcome this programme of investment at Stansted Airport, confirmed at Monday’s International Investment Summit, which promises to open doors to meaningful work and opportunities to gain skills for life for our residents, and signals that, under this government, Britain is once again open for business.

New jobs are all well and good, but on what pay and conditions? Will they be permanent contracts, seasonal or zero hours style? Given the unsocial hours nature of airport jobs what efforts will be made for working class women with things such as workplace crèches and flexible working? And of course will the new employers recognise trade unions for negotiating purposes? Lauding investment usually masks a whole series of issues that get forgotten once the journalists move on to the next story, especially as the environmental impact has not even been mentioned.

No mention of how noise and air pollution will be dealt with. No consideration of greenhouse gas emissions, although we know how Labour ditched their £20bn+ Green New Deal plans prior to the election. Those living with aircraft noise in Harlow not even given a moments thought. Not surprising for this current Labour government funded by big business freebies and donations.

I can see an obvious issue, a few actually. In 2022 Stansteads declared passenger traffic was 23.2 million. This development wants to nearly double that to 43 million passengers. At the moment 23,360 flights in and out happen at Stansted, they want to double this. Then there are the car journeys to and from Stansted doubling. What part of this is working towards Labours net zero, reducing emissions? Then you have the M11, still the same 3 lane motorway but Stansted want to add double it's own current vehicle traffic, how will this reduce car emissions and traffic? Lastly, Labour have cancelled the new Harlow hospital, Epping and Stortford hospitals are only day hospitals and the current Harlow hospital is failing now at current levels. In fact there are no new or large enough hospitals along the M11 corridor from London to Cambridge in the event of a major emergency. What part of this has been correctly approved when the infrastructure clearly fails the expansion request by Stansted?

More planes, more CO2. How does this swaure away with the government's plan to reach net zero?

Drop off charges are discounted for Harlow residents. It's not free but it's a very small fee for the convenience.

A total mistake: Hugely bad for combatting Climate Change: eg just a Journey from Stansted to Amsterdam by air is 26 times more pollution per passenger than rail and if you add in the awful one or two hours hanging around at the airport the time taken is much the same. See https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ePAHNHzcyTqFYXK/. Where the journeys are directly compared. An investment in rail to extend the central line out to Harlow and beyond would have made more sense. Until all aircraft can be powered by hydrogen then all airport expansions across the uk should be put on hold.
