Petition calling for General Election has over 5,000 ‘signatures” from Harlow
News / Tue 26th Nov 2024 at 10:40am
A PETITION calling for a new general election has hit more than 2.5 million signatures.
On Wednesday morning, the petition stood at 2.5 million.
Over 5,000 signatures on the petition claim to be from Harlow.

Speaking to ITV’s This Morning on Monday after the petition hit 2 million signatures, the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer said: “I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election – I’m not surprised that many of them want a re-run.”
The petition, which was launched on 20 November, has comfortably reached the 100,00 threshold for parliament to consider a debate on the topic.

There was a General Election on July 4th, 2024.
The result is below.
A lot of buyers' remorse. Labour didn't promise much in detail, but did promise Change. Sadly, the people got shortchanged.
There were 6.1 million signatures for a petition calling for Brexit to be cancelled in 2019; two years before that a petition for the same cause got 4.2 million signatures. Quite rightly, despite the fact that I disagreed with Brexit and think it has done huge damage to the UK, these petitions were ignored. Just as this petition should be ignored too. Its called democracy people. We will get another chance to vote in a General Election in 4.5 years time! And anyway, looks like quite a number of the signatures are fake and from outside the UK - all people need to do is put in a post code, there is no verification process. So we have no idea how many who “signed” it are genuinely UK voters!
Really – The map looks just like the Type II diabetes map of England. So the people who can’t even control what they eat – Remember them, the ones who wanted to take back control and said they wanted the British Parliament to make the decisions – Well we’ve got the mess they asked for – They’ve got moaning Nige and his weird thugs in parliament – Take a while to reflect on what you’ve done to this country or better still go out and get a job, rather complaining about the people trying to sort out your mess.
Also, the person who started this petition confirmed that he voted for the Tories in the last election. Quite Ironic when you consider the mess that they left this country in!
It is funny how predictable we all are. Every election we vote in the party that says “ vote for me and I will make all your dreams come true” even though we all know they are lying to us. We just can’t help it can we.
This is the most ridiculous piece on non-news! After any election, the people who didn't vote for the party in power want to re-run the election. The fact is it will not happen, and whoever is in power, it will never happen. Let's all get on with life and the realities of it!
Of course this petition will not lead to a general election. However, it does show the nations disgust with the labour government, in such a short space time has increased tuition fees, despite saying it would abolish them, removed the winter fuel allowance, condemning thousands of the poorest people to freeze this winter, increased taxes on worker despite saying they would not. That is before you hit ideological attacks on private schools which where never impact assessed and farming which are utterly insane. If I was Chris Vince and saw a poll like this I would however be concerned about his seat, as more people than his majority have signed it. So he might (hopefully in view) find himself unemployed at the next election, proving that to be a MP you have to work and represent constituents not just be a yes man!.
Adam, I think your using personal projection here. The article says 2.5 million signatures, I think, even with my iffy maths, over 54 million voters haven't signed. Just a bit soon to say "the nation's disgust'. Let's stay realistic please, and factual.
Eskoman - Maybe a little, but only 9M people voted for labour, I have honestly never seen people so fed up with politicians and government. It started with the Tories of course, but labour have doubled down on it. I do not know who politicians work for as they definitely do not work for the residents of this country.
I would certainly not argue that public trust with politicians is at an all time low. But the Tories had 14 years in power and royally screwed the electorate. Labour have been in for 4 months, let's at least give them a parliament before we write them off.
Labour out. Starmer out. Khan out
Labour, like many govts do, have raised taxes early in their govt. Does that really make them so bad. I have to agree that their first 4/5 months haven't been inspirational and some decisions have been politically stupid even though they may be financially sound. But do we want a govt that is populist, or one that will create a firmer basis after the chaos of recent years. We seem to be driven by news feeds that focus on a few aspects such as the increase in NI for larger companies but they don't so often refer to non headline grabbing news such as the increase in employers allowance to £10500 which will mean that smaller companies may not pay any NI. We should also be pleased with the raising of the minimum wage, if it takes people out of benefits it will save govt money (and they may also contribute income tax and NI. And don't forget that the tories reneged on their triple lock promise and their promises, made very frequently by Robert Halfon, to reduce taxes. They also allowed Russia to invade Ukraine in 2014 and then got caught out when they expanded the invasion in 2022.Increasing company costs may lead to improvements in productivity through better training which is really the only way for us to get betetr off. The successful companies often do spend money on training. Time, of course, will tell
Unfortunately as a nation we are getting poorer yet still try to spend the same on public services as when we were richer. If you lost your job you would adjust your life style to suit. Unfortunately our government will only ever increase the tax burden to try to maintain services regardless of who is in power. This approach eventually ends in tears, as the only way to fix our problems is to sell more goods and services to other countries. Think of it in household terms if you want things you have to go out to work to earn an income. It’s the same if you are a country.
If any pensioners signed the petition half of them will probably have frozen to death by next spring.
6 million AI votes no doubt. Regardless it is still a lot of Trumpist whinging over their loss. We copy so much from the USA so I am not surprised at this anti democracy movement. They all complain but none of them have a clue how to resolve the problems we have. This Trumpism is a dangerous movement, next we will have a storming of the Houses of Parliament. We have one of the oldest democracies in the word, where we're they when we left the EU? That was a closer vote but I don't remember a petition to have a second vote.
Why are people surprised? Politics is usually tell them what they want to hear to get elected, get into power, do what you need to do to stay in power, rinse and repeat
This silly petition has received names from over 140 countries, including more votes from B.A.T than people stationed there. Plus Elon Musk is supporting it, says it all. Labour has a lot on to redress the damage caused by 14 years of 'austerity' and it's not going to be pain-free.
All you snowflake righties should respect the will of the people. The referendum, sorry, election, was about sovereignty. You lost, we won, so get over it. So if you want a second referendum, sorry, another general election, you need to get over it. We voted, we won, you have to accept it, even if you don't like it. The people in Harlow voted for Brexit, sorry, Labour, so you righties who are voting for a second referendum, sorry, election, should just accept they lost and get over it. At time of writing, 2.7M votes on the petition, with no sense of irony at all. Maybe there should be a petition to bring back Liz Truss? Will that get more votes than this?
How childish. Conservatives were in power for 14 years. Labour haven't fixed it all in like 14 weeks so its time to kick them out? That's ridiculous.
Given Labours bashing of the tories and promising before and during the election "we have seen the problems, we have plans and they are all costed" only to break most of the promises and then attack the elderly, farmers, business's and employers, I can't say I'm suprised by the petition, 2.7 million at the time of writing this post. Given the behaviour of our mp I can see why a good number are from Harlow. I was dissapointed he did not hold a number of surgeries in regards to the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, to sound out how the people he's supposed to represent in Harlow, feel about it.
With a name like Dr Witch, it's a bit rich calling people sick in the head.
Remember Boris stared directly into a camera and lied about all night parties when people weren't allowed to attend funerals of loved ones. Starmer has very slightly lowered the threshold for paying inheritance tax on multi-multi-million pound properties. These are not the same. Throwing a tantrum because you hate "lefties" is incredibly childish. You lost. Get over it.
What about Sunak? Standing at a lectern with a Stop the Boats sign on it. Did he stop any? No he didn’t. The Tories even paid one person to go to Rwanda
Perhaps people should study the Recall legislation more carefully! 10% of the electorate in a constituency can recall their MP and force a By-election! Sign up to Project Recall page on Facebook!
10% of the Electorate in Harlow - 7,600!
Mark, my racist aunt is always on Facebook - I’m a bit young to use it - I guess, if it is anything like the Nextdoor App, then it’s full of people getting wound up into a frenzy about the Mayor of London and convinced that ULEZ cameras are the work of the Deep State and that 5G mast give you Covid - Anyway, I wouldn’t believe anything that you read there. Recall proceedings in the UK parliament are initiated only if an MP is found guilty of wrongdoing fulfilling certain criteria - That is: any custodial prison sentence: a conviction for providing false or misleading expenses claims or a lengthy suspension from the House of Commons. The Recall of MPs Act 2015 does not allow constituents to initiate proceedings, Mark, you might also be surprised that there is no requirement for MPs to disclose previous convictions to the public when standing for election. So the Reform MP for South Basildon who was jailed for 'kicking' his girlfriend, but he nor his party disclosed the conviction at the election, won’t face any sanction and this man will be making laws for us all! Crazy!
Trumpites trying to destroy our democracy. Mark Gough what do you actually stand for? Do even know?
14 years of incompetent chaos under the Tories can't be corrected in 4 months. The Tories more than trebled immigration, destroyed the NHS, blew billions on HS2 and Liz Truss's disasterous mini budget. They had 6 leaders in 8 years as they fought like cats in a sack whilst the country went down the pan. I'll judge Labour after 4 years not 4 months.
