Exploring Central Europe: A Tour Through Its Most Stunning Cities

Collaborative post / Mon 3rd Feb 2025 at 09:43am

When it comes to tourism, Europe has a lot to offer. There’s an incredible amount of history and culture to uncover on the continent, and most tourists barely scratch the surface. Depending on where you visit, you might discover gorgeous little medieval hamlets, vibrant urban art scenes, and eye-popping natural spectacle.

The very centre of Europe is often overlooked in favour of the West. But there’s a great deal to explore in this part of the world, and the major cities are an excellent place to start. Let’s run through a few of the more amazing cities in the region.

Budapest

The Hungarian capital is a city built on hot springs. You’ll find plenty of bathhouses here, as well as grand cathedrals and other amazing structures. The Basilica of St Steven, with its iconic domed roof, is the most famous catholic Church in the country. Perhaps the most impressive building in the city, however, is the Hungarian parliament, which brings together Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles.

Prague

One of the best things about the Czech capital is that the centre is so heavily pedestrianised. You can easily walk from the amazing Wenceslas Square to the castle on the other side of the city, and find time to walk through the Old Town, and across the amazing Charles Bridge, in the process. There’s a huge amount of culture and history packed into a relatively small space – and exploring it is a pleasure.

Vienna

Vienna has, historically, been a major hub for European artists, intellectuals and musicians. Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud all made their home here, and their legacy has helped shape the modern tourist experience in the city. You might book a classical concert at the Schönbrunn Palace, before heading out to the Alps for some of the best ski holidays Austria has to offer

Bratislava

Just a short trip from Vienna is Bratislava, with its historic downtown and picturesque, cobblestone streets. The city is often overlooked in favour of some of the other, more famous destinations we’ve mentioned. But it deserves consideration in its own right, especially if you’re looking for something different. The city is small and affordable, making it perfect for those looking for a weekend trip. If you’re planning a tour of the wider region, or a trip along the Danube, a night or two in this city is surely worthwhile.

Kraków

Until 1596, when the reigning king Sigismund III Vasa moved his court to Warsaw, Krakow was the capital of Poland. You can still find plenty of amazing things to see and do in Poland’s second city, including the amazing Wawel Royal Castle, and the Barbican, which sits at the flank of the inner medieval city
