Patient satisfaction with GP services in England has collapsed, research finds

Health / Thu 24th Apr 2025 at 10:43am

PATIENTS’ satisfaction with GP services has collapsed in recent years as family doctors have switched to providing far fewer face-to-face appointments, new research has revealed reports The Guardian.

The proportion of patients seeing a GP in person has plummeted from more than four-fifths (80.7%) in 2019 to just under two-thirds (66.2%) last year.

Telephone appointments have almost doubled over the same period from 13.4% to 25.4%. Those undertaken by video or online, including some in which patients fill in an online form but have no direct interaction with a GP, have risen almost eightfold from 0.6% to 4.6%.

Obtaining treatment at a local surgery is like a game of snakes and ladders. You have to learn what are the ladders, especially to get past the admin/ reception to the actual medical practitioners.

I have been a patient of Jenner House in Old Harlow for some 25 plus years, and, sometimes it is difficult to get through to make an appointment. But, it isn't the fault of the staff because, the high numbers of patients trying to get through to the operators. Frustrating ? certainly. This surgery is probably, without question, at the top of the tree for service and civility and the patients are treated remarkably well, I cannot praise them highly enough.

Whatever, I agree that Jenner is one of the best and I've heard horror stories from friends about some of the other practices in the town. I seem to be one of the lucky ones but I'm conscious of the fact that, without new GP surgeries appearing at New Hall and Gilden Park, Jenner House may become overwhelmed.

I personally like telephone appointments, I don't like face to face. I can make myself feel more comfortable being at home and make more sense of what the conversation is about.

Because the population has increased by about 10 million in the last 10- 15 years all medical services have not kept pace.We all know the difficulties of being able to see a Doctor. Last year a friend of mine wasn't well.l said you need to go to the Dr's. He said l tried but no appointments were available. I took him home.As he was Diabetic l got him to check his blood sugar levels which was fine.I then went to the Dr's to enquire about appointments and confirmed fully booked. Upon further questioning they did say you could book an evening appointment at Lister House later in the week.A few days later l saw him in PAH within 2 weeks he died. If he could have seen a Dr he maybe here today
