Letter to Editor: Live export ban must not be reversed

Dear Editor,
May 20 marks one year since live exports were banned from Great Britain ending long, gruelling journeys abroad for millions of animals. This was a historic moment of celebration after more than 50 years of campaigning and a milestone moment for the UK as leaders in animal welfare.

However, one year on and we fear this law is now in jeopardy. There’s fears the UK Government could backtrack on the milestone ban. Crucially, Ministers have failed to confirm if a reversal of the ban could be on the negotiating table following the news of a breakthrough in the EU trade deal. The UK was able to introduce a ban once the UK left the European Union but as politicians confirm their intention to re-set the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with Europe, the ban must not be dismantled as part of talks.
Any backtracking on this law and a return to animals taking on these gruelling journeys to the continent once more would be a terrible step backwards for our animal welfare standards. No perceived trade benefits can mitigate that. Transporting live animals causes them to suffer unnecessary, long, crowded journeys abroad resulting in mental exhaustion, physical injury, hunger, dehydration, severe stress and even death. It is unthinkable that we could allow these practices to return.
Many of your readers in Essex will have witnessed the cruel export of animals at ports like Brightlingsea in the past and many joined us in passionately campaigning to see this brought to an end in the region. There have been important protests at ports in recent years with residents and organisations tirelessly campaigning to see an end to this cruel practice and many will be extremely troubled that this could be a possibility once more.
Figures from Defra show up to 40 million farm animals, including sheep, calves and pigs, were exported from Britain for further rearing or slaughter since the 1960s. This equates to 13,888 a week or 82 animals suffering every hour.
We urge the UK Government to ensure live animal exports remain consigned to the past – where they belong.
David Bowles, Head of Public Affairs at the RSPCA
This is a dreadful prospect. Starmer looks set to add animals to the list of vulnerable groups he is undermining. I look forward to Labour being ousted at the next election.
I'll second that David forman.
Chris Vince, hope you are paying attention.
We should also end the barbaric non stun slaughter of animals on religious grounds. This cruel treatment is banned in Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland so why can't England adopt the same policy
I totally agree with Mr Bowles that live animal transportation of ANY KIND is cruel & inhumane. Everyone will rightly be up in arms at the prospect of a dog being left in a locked car in the summer heat, but what do the RSPCA do about the thousands of animals transported miles across the UK in a metal prison lorry to the slaughterhouse. Pigs, chickens, sheep, cows etc crammed into these hot metal boxes, no access to water, they cant breath, they become injured as they climb on top of eachother trying to get to the tiny air holes in the side of the box. I'll tell you what the RSPCA do- NOTHING!! Factory farming is cruel & inhumane!! This government need to grow some b*lls & take action across the board & look at all aspects of factory farming, slaughterhouse practices & animal transportation!! And do something about the out of date RSPCA Assured scheme which is totally ignoring the cruelty & abhorrent conditions inside factory farms & the cruelty which is being totally overlooked until the likes Joey Carbstrong becomes involved! Chris Packham, Caroline Lucus & Brian May all recently resigned their positions within the RSPCA because you refuse to acknowledge the cruelty! And yes, I am vegan & proud.
How apt Mr Bowles that an advert from CIWF (Compassion in World Farming) just flashed up on the Your Harlow showing a pregnant sow trapped on her side in a narow cage waiting to give birth to her piglets. She is unable to move, can't nurture her piglets, just has to lay there so they can feed from her!! Where do the RSPCA stand on this? Nowhere!! You think its ok!! Same as you think gas chambers to slaughter pigs are OK. Dipping sheep completely underwater in chemicals is ok to kill scab when there are more humane methods available. Yes, be concerned with what might happen in the future, but also take care of what IS happening to them now!!
I do love my meat groups as food but there are standards I will not drop. No kosher or Halal meat, only free range natural meat and I buy depending on the husbandry quality. One of the Brexit benefits for me was the live export ban, something that should have been in place years before, brexit or not. I hope this much needed law remains in place and Defra listen to the vast majority of people in this country.
