THE British Medical Association (BMA) has announced that resident doctors are planning to take continuous industrial action from 7am on Friday 25 July to 7am on Wednesday 30 July.
Patient safety is our absolute priority, and we are adjusting services and our staffing to maintain quality care.
Here’s what you need to know:

Thank you for your support and understanding.
A five day strike should be considered a "break in contract of employment" - You can't leave patients to die and then go back at the end of it and think everything will be cosy.
Haven't heard a peep from our MP Chris Vince on the strike yet. Obviously waiting to see what KS has to say then will 100% back him. Have your own opinion Chris its not a crime.
Why are they going on strike?
Going in strike again money that a laughable Do they want the NHS to go private
Wage restoration - Back to 2018 levels of something like that Adrienne. We’d all like that Adrienne, instead we face increased taxes to pay for the out of control cost of government, benefits and pensions - At the same time, we’re being told, we're not saving enough for our pensions and the retirement age will likely need to increase again. They got a huge increase last year, yet we’ve seen no real increase in productivity. Sure give them a raise, but pay for it by making them pay for their training and by scrapping NHS pensions - or widen the tax base, so the cost doesn’t fall on the same group of us all the time.
Isn't "resident doctors" the new name for junior doctors, the same group who got 22% only 12 months ago and with no proposed changes in working practices? This deal was agreed by the junior doctors themselves. This was at the same time pensioners were being told the government were telling pensioners that they were to lose their winter heating allowance.
Doreen , people have been paying into NHS pensions all their lives If we scrap the pensions. How will they get paid their pension. I don't think scrapping the NHS is the answer . It needs a different approach. Most people I presume that are very well off go private. So surely, the NHS will have a great more amount of money than private healthcare. In lay woman's terms...The NHS should be the best health care in the world.
Pay the doctors properly or they will leave. Then the NHS will be in even more trouble.
Doctors/nurses were never on a fair wage to start with many years ago along with the ridiculous student loans many have to pay, even on a 30-35k salary you're paying at least £100 a month in repayments
They have to pay student loans because they borrowed the money for further education. That said, the value of outstanding student loans at the end of March 2025 reached £267 billion according to the house of commons Library. Tim, as to "Doctors/nurses were never on a fair wage to start with" When was the last time you started a job without knowing what your wages are?
Easy solution.Scrap the student loans. But issue a mandatory 5 year deal to work with the NHS. Pay them properly, you know if done properly it takes A big chunk of your life to get fully educated in this profession. You have to be fully committed. And if you don't look after them, they will just leave the country and go abroad. I do feel it's happening too frequently,I suppose student debt doesn't help either. But at the same time there is one pot of money al.A very difficult situation to negotiate. A I didn't agree with in the past was people buying their certificates under the table But British education of doctors and nurses etc is still one of the best . If we don't appreciate what we have we will lose it and that would be very sad indeed. Good luck 🤞
"Losing doctors early from the NHS is costing taxpayers in England up to £2.4bn a year at the current rate, according to a British Medical Association (BMA) report. This could rise to £5bn a year if action isn’t taken to retain doctors’ services within the NHS, the report added. The union estimates that between 15,000 and 23,000 doctors left the NHS between September 2022 and September 2023. Replacing them and their expertise will cost between £1.6bn and £2.4bn according to the BMA, which went on to warn that the number of doctors indicating that they intend to leave the NHS is rising." Greedy doctors as usual. As consultants with their private work they earn well over £200k, this poor face they put on is just a joke! The BMA are taking away all of their credibility! Patients are fed up of being used as a pawn so doctors can earn more! Shame on them.
The BMA tries to eradicate the wonderful Physician associates, ANPs and ACPs working at PAH so they can go on strike and cause maximum damage to patients! Those roles are absolutely essential and do a wonderful job. I, for one, am sick to death of doctors bullying their way through the NHS and withdrawing care for the sake of more money!
Do FY1 Doctors still start 1 st August?
