History / Fri 8th Aug 2025 at 10:03am

A PLANNING application has been submitted by the Memorial University in Old Harlow after a car reversed into one of its buildings.

The application states:

Following damage caused by the impact of a motor vehicle works are required to repair and reinstate damage to the existing external wall and replacement of the badly damaged ground floor timber window with a facsimile based on salvaged parts and adjacent matching window.

External wall to be finished externally in painted lime based render and painted weatherboarding to match existing. Also the replacement of the damaged timber support post internally with a new post and internal plasterboard and skim finish on battens all to match existing materials.

For more information, look for HW/LBC/25/00324 on the Harlow Council planning portal.

Cabot House is a Grade 11 listed building.

In the early 1960s a row of three cottages was converted into a single building which housed the home and dental surgery of Dr. P.S. Arbon. The English Heritage description of this Grade II listed building dates it as mid-19th century, but an inspection of the building and a discussion with architectural historian David Lloyd suggests it is at least a century older than this, making it early Georgian. It was purchased as a student residence by Memorial University in 1995 and re-named Cabot House in 1997, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Harlow New Town and the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of Newfoundland by John Cabot.

In 2024, we interviewed Harlow resident Bernard Field, who restored the building in the early seventies.
