ON FRIDAY, we will be marking the eightieth anniversary of Victory in Japan Day (VJ Day).

In March 2020, YH interviewed war veteran Richard Edser.

From his Quarry Spring home, he recalled joining the Royal Navy and from there, a military career that culminated in the Far East.

As he wittily said when someone asked where he was on VE Day in 1945.

Richard said: “Well I was a bit busy as my ship in the Far East was being bombed by Japanese kamikaze pilots!”

Richard passed away a few months later in 2020.

He was a wonderful man, who often spoke at schools and always attended remembrance services.

So, we thought we would replay our interview with Richard and thank him for his service.
