Harlow Labour issue statement over Tory-council decision on flags of St George on lamp posts

News / Sat 23rd Aug 2025 at 09:36am

THE HARLOW Labour group has issued a statement following the Tory-led council’s decision to allow flags of St George to be attached to lampposts across Harlow.

It is understood that the flags are part of a campaign called Operation Raise The Colours. A campaign that is set to culminate in a large demonstration in London on September 13th.

A spokespersons for Harlow Labour said:

“We ask Councillor Swords three questions.

1) Why is he supporting the movement to put up flags of St. George on Council property at this time. Is it really a show of national pride or is it a crude and hollow attempt at copying Kemi Badenoch’s chasing of Reform voters by encouraging hatred of migrants?

2) We would also like to know what he intends to do when the flags become frayed and bedraggled over time. Will Council tax money be spent on maintaining or removing them?

3) Are other groups to be encouraged by the Council to paint roundabouts and hang flags from lamp-posts?

The Labour party recognises the frustration local people feel about the use of hotels to house migrants.
We see hypocritical Conservative shadow ministers whipping up an anti-immigrant frenzy when it was their party in government that encouraged and escalated the use of hotels to number over 400 across the country.

This is a problem caused by the Conservative government’s failure to process claims quickly enough, preventing genuine refugees from starting work and contributing to our society, whilst also delaying the swift deportation of those without a legitimate claim.

“That is why the Labour government has invested in additional staff to speed asylum claims up, reduced the numbers of hotels used to around 200 and pledged to cease using hotels by 2029”

The deputy leader of the Harlow Labour group, Lanie Shears was a little bit more direct. Her message on X was as follows:

Isn’t it funny how Labour Councils, will allow any national flag to be flown, except for our national flag, I think they are so wrong, but, that’s probably why I stopped my Labour Party membership in 2015, dispite being a member for years, and at 80, I’m still a fully paid up union member.

Considering the fact that the leader of the Raise the Colours campaign Andy Saxon is a convicted criminal who in his town of Wolverhampton embroiled himself in a racist brawl with a black man that resulted in his death back in 2009. Back then Raise the Colours' Andy Saxon was known in his real name of Andrew Currien and he received an 18 month prison sentence for affray. Andy Saxon became the bodyguard for Tommy Robinson when he was leader of the English Defence League and has been his loyal ally for 16 years. Saxon/Currien now runs a security company providing goons to facilitate far-right events organised by the likes of Britain First and others. Saxon/Currien is hardly your average concerned citizen. See report of his Britain First goon show in March this year at https://hopenothate.org.uk/2025/03/04/expectation-vs-reality-britain-firsts-humiliation-in-nuneaton/

A good statement by Harlow Labour Party that strikes the right balance although it fails to point out the Raise the Colours campaign is basically an advertising campaign for a far-right demonstration on September 13 led by convicted criminal Tommy Robinson. Robinson's criminal record includes assaulting an off-duty police officer, assault by head-butting, mortgage fraud, using a false passport and contempt of court that nearly scuppered a trial. Why is it only appropriate to fly our English flag during sporting events and not any other time.... Many UK citizens are trying to demonstrate flying our flag isn't about thuggery but pride to be British/English..

David Forman - I don't always agree with some of your comments on here; but on this occasion I agree 100% with you. We have every right to be proud of the British and English flag. But our flag is being used by the far-right and people like "Tommy Robinson", members of the Homeland Party and former members of other neo-nazi partys like Combat 18, to intimidate ethnic minorities and people who disagree with their views. The scenes of flags being raised on lamposts and "protesters" wrapping themselves in Union Jacks or the George Cross reminds me of those bad old days of the National Front in the 1970's. Don't tell me this isn't about racism. People will say "why does the flag scare you"? Its not the flag, its the people involved in this movement and their beliefs and their hated and thier attempts to divide our society that many people from ethnic minorities are scared and intimidated by. And that's exactly what the people behind this movement want.

Why is not many flags put up on St George’s day, our patron saint, 23rd April but more are going up lately , everyone has the right to live honestly and respect each other, everyone who goes abroad respect their culture so the same should happen here all people should respect each other no matter who they are
