Basildon: Racist abuse arrest after flags painted on homes

News / Sun 24th Aug 2025 at 02:01pm

OFFICERS investigating reports of criminal damage and a racially aggravated incident in Basildon have made an arrest.

This follows multiple reports received from the public reporting a video circulating online showing individuals applying paint to the exterior of several properties in Whitmore Way.

At one stage in the video, racist abuse is audibly and visibly directed at a woman who is passing by alongside some children.

As a result of further enquiries, on Saturday 23 August a 33-year-old man, from Basildon, was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and conspiracy to commit criminal damage.

He has been questioned and released on bail while our investigation continues.

We are assessing the video in question, but if anyone has any further information which could assist us, or any concerns, please get in touch.

Chief Inspector Paul Hogben said: “Regardless of anyone’s thoughts or views, causing damage by applying paint to people’s properties is clearly a criminal offence.

“Aside from that simple fact, some of the language directed towards a member of the public in this incident was disgraceful.

“I’m confident the vast majority of people in Essex share the view this language has no place in our county.

“We’ve received numerous reports in relation to this matter and it’s only right that we acted upon them.
“We always work to ensure the safety and security of everyone in Essex.

“Behaviour like this does nothing to further any argument or make any valid point beyond harming our district and causing distress, alarm and fear to innocent people.”

Let's see the usual try to defend this as patriotism

I've noticed that round this way, someone has been painting three circles in a trianglular constellation the roundabouts .- Is that some sort of Far Right emblem - or just someone who hasn't read the Brand Guidelines? Looks an absolute mess, especially as it is just a few yards from the newly restored war memorial.

This is a symptom of the protests and the flag flying. Racists are becomng empowered. It will only get worse. And that is exactly what the far-right people responsible for organising all this want. Division and hatred.

Surprise surprise! It's almost like the explosion of flags is nothing to do with patriotism, in the same way that the protests at hotels have nothing to do with protecting women and girls.

Nancy, I haven't seen the painting you are referring to, but it could be the Triskelion, which is a symbol used by German and Eastern European fascists. See Triskelion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskelion#:~:text=A%20triskelion%20or%20triskeles%20is,represent%20three%20bent%20human%20limbs.
