Harlow Council announces programme to clean all street signs across Harlow

HARLOW Council has this morning announced a new programme to clean road signs and street furniture across the town as part of its ongoing mission to ‘renew our neighbourhoods’. The initiative will see street signs, roundabout markers, bollards, traffic cones, and other public street assets fully cleaned – many for the first time in decades.
While responsibility for this type of maintenance traditionally rests with Essex County Council, Harlow Council has chosen to step in. As part of the council’s Building Harlow’s Future plan, this year it committed to “embed a programme of proactive action to address the maintenance gaps left by Essex County Council”. This programme is a tangible example of that commitment in action.
The goal of the project is simple but powerful: to cut through the grime that obscures signs, refresh the appearance of street furniture, and restore pride in Harlow’s streets.
The cleaning programme is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks and will be rolled out systematically, covering every street sign and piece of street furniture across the town. Residents can expect to see a visible transformation in their neighbourhoods as the work progresses.
Commenting on the programme, Councillor Nicky Purse, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“We’re on a mission to renew our neighbourhoods, and that means stepping in – even when it is not our responsibility – to restore pride in our town. Dirty, neglected signs are a daily frustration for our residents, and they send the wrong message about our community. That’s why we’re proud to announce a programme to clean each and every street sign and piece of street furniture across Harlow – clearing the dirt, refreshing our streets, and restoring pride in our town as we Build Harlow’s Future.”
This initiative is part of a wider effort by Harlow Council to transform the town’s public spaces, improve safety, and enhance the everyday experience of residents and visitors. It complements ongoing work across estates, parks, and public areas – all designed to support the vision of Building Harlow’s Future by creating cleaner and more vibrant neighbourhoods that residents can be proud of.
I applaud the commitment to clean up street furniture in Town. How much is this going to cost? It will only encourage contractors of ECC to leave everything behind knowing HDC will clear it up Wouldnt it be better to get ECC to do it by chasing up their contractors and charge them for the service? Isn't it in the Contracts? V
Isn't functional street signage the responsibility of Essex Highways rather than Harlow Council? Isn't that what we pay ECC a chunk of Council Tax for.....for the upkeep of the adopted highway network and associated infrastructure?
Perhaps at the same time the sign opposite the Leisurezone that gives directions to Harvey Street can finally be corrected !
as well as improving the legibility of street signs surely now would an appropriate time to get a cherry picker and remove the flags that have been on some of the lampposts since the end of last month, it's all very well for the council to claim that this isn't a major issue but seeing that the vast majority of them are starting to become tatty (with one or two of them being caught in foliage) it would make sense for them to be removed before they fall into the road and become a danger to passing motorists!. I will certainly be bringing this up at the next council meeting and I hope somebody will be willing to take this matter in hand!
It's all very well doing this cleaning of signs, BUT more rubbish bins are needed, teaching children & adults alike to either put rubbish in a bin in your pocket then wait till you get to the right place to get rid of it NOT on the street. Also people need to stop dumping rubbish wherever they feel like. The amount of gardens & homes that are neglected for one reason or another need to be sorted to help with the so-called 'cleanup'. Also think about the amount of empty shops that certainly doesn't inspire confidence

Livvy, you are quite right. More rubbish bins are needed and need to be emptied regularly too, otherwise the local rat population will multiply. I applaud the Council’s efforts though, even though it is not strictly their job to clean road signs, as stated in this article.
Before cleaning the signs lots need some hedges and branches cutting back so they can be read when driving.
Are you going to sort out all the signs on the cycle paths that point in the wrong direction and have done for years?
It rather proves what a failure Conservative controlled Essex County Council is. It also proves the usefulness of having a unitary authority, although not on the scale of what Labour government want.
Fix the bl@@dy potholes!
Milwards could do with a lick of paint while your at it. It's such an eyesore it's embarrassing, and I don't even live there.
Great news, some will always belly ache. Any improvement is great. You have to start somewhere. Thank you Harlow Council
Yes great but Harlow Council should bill Essex Council for work they should have done or stop some off the council tax paid to them. then maybe the work will get done in the future. and leave the flags alone why are we the only country that can't take pride in our flag without a negotiated response when we fly it. I am English and proud and it should be the same for any person whos country that makes up the union Jack
