FROM managing budgets to pursuing university dreams, learners are showing how boosting numeracy skills gives them confidence. Maths skills also open doors to new opportunities that can change their lives. This Maths Week some ACL Essex maths learners from Maldon share their experiences.

Elle Major, has been studying ‘Maths All Levels’. She said: “I struggled with maths at school, so I never got a GCSE. I wanted to do nursing a few years ago but wasn’t accepted because I didn’t have my maths. Now, I’m hoping to achieve my Level 2 with ACL Essex, the equivalent of a GCSE, so I can finally go on to university. With the new skills I’ve learned, I’ve even managed to budget and put money aside for a trip to Barcelona!”

Cassie Moore, another maths student, shared: “The class was really supportive and helpful. We all helped each other out. I’ve started budgeting more for my daughter’s Christmas and birthday, for petrol and everything. It’s made a real difference.”

Sharon Gibbs added: “I’d really recommend coming to the ACL centre in Maldon. It’s opened my world up! I’ve become much more confident and even built a kitchen island at home thanks to my new maths skills. I’ve made new friends, and I’m determined to finish my course. If you’re lacking confidence, this place will give you the boost you need for your future.”

ACL Essex offers a wide range of free maths courses. From budgeting workshops and Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level to Level 2), right through to GCSE Maths. This can help those looking to gain qualifications for work or further study. Courses are flexible, supportive and designed to help learners grow their confidence with numbers in everyday life.
