Leader of Harlow Council announces changes to cabinet

News / Thu 5th Feb 2026 at 07:09am

THE Leader of Harlow Council has today confirmed changes to the Council’s Cabinet.

Cllr Joel Charles (Cabinet Member for Public Protection) and Cllr Alastair Gunn (Cabinet Member for Planning and Garden Town) will be stepping down from the Cabinet after taking up new roles in their professional lives. Both will continue to serve as ward councillors in the Harlow Conservative Group.

As part of the reshuffle, Cllr Michael Hardware will take on the role of Cabinet Member for Planning and Garden Town. Responsibility for Local Government Reorganisation and Devolution will move directly to the Leader of the Council.

Cllr Nicky Purse will assume responsibility for Licensing, Environmental Health and Enforcement, while Cllr Danielle Brown will take on responsibility for Community Safety. All other Cabinet portfolios will remain unchanged.

Commenting on the changes, Cllr Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:

“We are working day and night to Build Harlow’s Future, and our plan is working. I am delighted for Cllr Charles and Cllr Gunn as they take on new professional roles, and I thank them for the immense contribution they have made to everything this administration has achieved during their time in Cabinet.

“I know they will continue to support this administration with the same focus and commitment in their ongoing roles as ward councillors.”

Meh who care the council is illegitimate having cancelled elections. I like Dan think he has done well for the town but for cancelling elections he needs to lose his seat.

Council leader Dan Swords has taken on Local Government Reorganisation and Devolution. We know who to blame if it goes horribly wrong.

With crime in Harlow having risen by 6% last year compared with 2024 and Jan25 seeing Harlow having the highest monthly crime rate in Essex, no wonder Cllr Joel Charles is scampering off, although ironically to become deputy police, fire and crime commissioner! Failure pays it seems!
