THIRTEEN sixth form pupils participated in The Brilliant Club, Scholars Programme this year. During the programme it gives pupils the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher to develop key academic skills and experience university-style learning, in preparation for successful applications and transitions to higher education.

The programme is structured around seven tutorials where students will develop their subject knowledge and critical thinking skills through independent research tasks and group work. The students work towards completing a challenging final assignment of 2,500 words, which is marked and moderated using university grades. This year St Mark’s pupils wrote an essay on ‘Where do child rights come from?’.
This year all 13 Sixth Form pupils achieved a 1st or 2:1 which is a fantastic achievement and something we are tremendously proud of. Pupils attended a Graduation Event at Newnham College, University of Cambridge on Tuesday 24 February where their achievements were celebrated.
Sharon Shaji Year 12 pupil said: “My experience with The Brilliant Club has been both enriching and transformative. The programme has significantly strengthened my academic confidence, sharpened my critical thinking skills, and broadened my aspirations for the future.
The programme challenged me to think with greater independence, engage more critically with complex ideas, and articulate my arguments with clarity and confidence. The guidance and mentorship I received were invaluable, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to take part.
I am certain that the knowledge, skills, and self-belief I have developed will continue to benefit me in my future studies and beyond”.
Pupils also had a tour of the university and completed a Q+ A session with Cambridge graduates and current students. They were able to get an insight into what it is like to study at a Russell Group University.
It's good that they have been given the chance to see how things go. The cost cannot be ignored as well as the amount of graduates with degree's but no employment. Focusing on your strengths and seeing the markets needs is critical to deciding if university is for you. I wish them all well.
