ESSEX Build Expo 26 took place on 7 March. It brought together SMEs, major building firms and skills providers to support sustainable growth across the region’s £7.8 billion construction sector.

The Essex Growth Agency organised the event. It aims to support opportunities for SMEs and the wider construction supply chain.

Meet‑the‑buyer sessions linked firms with major contractors and Essex County Council Procurement. A tech clinic also offered advice on automation, AI and digital workflow tools.

The Expo also launched the Essex Supply Chain Portal. This is a digital hub connecting suppliers to construction, infrastructure and retrofit opportunities.

Award winning construction leader Siu Mun Li opened a special Women in Construction Anglia zone. With 20 years’ experience of major UK infrastructure projects, she spoke about leadership and career growth. Her message encouraged women and career changers to lead change in the sector.

Opening the event, Councillor McKinlay, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and Cabinet Member for Communities, Transformation and Economic Growth, said:
Construction plays a huge role in driving our county’s economy. It creates opportunities for businesses, supports our communities, and opens doors for the next generation of workers.

“Essex Build Expo brings together everyone involved in construction- from industry leaders to the future workforce who will shape the next decade of growth. It’s a great example of Essex’s ambition to build sustainably, develop new skills, and support the people who power our industry.”

Construction remains one of Essex’s strongest industries. It employs more than 65,000 people, and jobs are set to grow by more than a third by 2030. The Expo highlighted growth across the sector, fuelled by major projects and new infrastructure.

As part of the Essex Year of Opportunity, the event helped employers, students and early‑career professionals connect. Panels shared real experiences and offered simple guidance on building a diverse workforce.

Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said:

“As demand grows and projects progress, Build Expo has never been more important. Essex is a county that builds communities, including homes, infrastructure, careers and opportunity. This event celebrates the people and partners driving that progress.”

Chris Vince will be saying it's all due to a stable Labour government!
