Essex Police: A road safety statement after Easter Bank Holiday weekend collisions.

Crime / Wed 8th Apr 2026 at 06:47am

THE Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) issues a vital road safety statement after Easter bank holiday weekend collisions.

Over the four day break, there were five serious injuries and one fatal collision on Essex roads, among those injured were a child and two motorcyclists. There was also an additional fatal collision just outside Essex on the M25.

Warmer weather and longer days often mean more people out on the roads; whether that’s for leisure trips, days out, or time with family and friends. But it can also bring increased risks with more vulnerable road users present, such as walkers, cyclists motorcyclists and children. There can also be a temptation for some drivers to travel at higher speeds.

Alcohol, drugs and excess speed were apparent among the bank holiday collisions – higher speeds and driving under the influence reduces margins for error, putting everyone at risk. This bank holiday headline data is a reminder of the ripple effect these risks have on local communities.

Our message is simple: every journey matters and everyone deserves a safe one.

Before you set off, think about the choices you make behind the wheel or on two wheels. Slow down, stay within the limits, never drive under the influence, and always look out for others- especially those more vulnerable. Let’s ensure next month’s May Bank Holiday is a happy and safe one for Essex.

Police should make an immediate assessment of who caused the accident and remove the driver's licence immediately pending a court hearing. Perhaps that would focus minds on safe driving

A big majority of drivers are constantly breaking speed limits, i see them all the time as a new pedestrian, hurtling around Harlow`s roads with no concern for anyone else. It is shocking and how these people passed the driving test is beyond me. We need to come down hard on these idiots.

No mention of tech induced accidents. I bought a new car last year and it has tried to kill me at least 4 times Emergency braking kicks in for no reason causing scary situations on the motorway and the so called steering assist trying to drive me off the road. Turns out you can’t turn these systems off and in the event of an accident it’s my fault . I am guessing this is illegal because by law you must be in control of your vehicle, and if the vehicle can override your actions you are not in control. I would be interested to know the number of accidents caused by these so called driver assist systems

I believe that the one safety system in new cars that can be turned off is the speed limiter. Although in newer models, it’s automatically turned on again every time the engine is turned off, in queueing traffic? The one common cause in most of these accidents is speed! But the EU who regulates vehicle construction, allows this situation to exist to appease the car manufacturers, who would struggle to sell their expensive powerful cars, if their drivers had to conform with the roads speed limits

The speed limiters do not work as they are wrong about speed limits about 20-30 percent of the time. My car thinks M11 between jc7 and 7a is 30mph. Sometime it thinks potter street is 20 or 30 or 60 when it is clearly signed as 20. Older cars display the speed more accurately than new cars. Hence the reason the system can be turned off on new cars as it is often wrong
