Letter to Editor: Antenatal support in Harlow

Dear Editor,

AS a local mum and founder of The Parent Hood of Harlow CIC, I’ve been thinking a lot about antenatal support in our town, especially after conversations with families who come into the hub every week.

I hear a lot of praise for the hospital’s pregnancy circles that cover the essentials of labour and birth, and in an NHS system that is clearly under pressure, our local midwives are doing their very best to make sure parents understand how to have a safe delivery and care for their newborn.

But giving birth is only one part of the story. Becoming a parent changes everything. Alongside the practical information, expectant parents also need to consider how having a baby will affect their relationship: Will they still feel like themselves? How will they prepare emotionally, not just physically? And, how can the non-birthing partner feel more involved and confident before the baby arrives?

Across the country, independent antenatal courses can cost between £200 and £350. For some families that simply isn’t affordable. Even if cost isn’t the main issue, it does make you question whether this kind of support should feel like a luxury.

Harlow is growing, with new families moving here every year. If we want our town to thrive, it makes sense to think about supporting parents early, not just when things become difficult.

With that in mind, we’re launching a funded antenatal wellbeing course, Matrescence Plus, at The Parent Hood Hub next week. It has been designed to compliment what the hospital provides and will be a space to talk, reflect and prepare for the emotional and everyday changes that come with becoming a parent.

Safe births will always be the priority of our health service. But perhaps, as a community, we can also think about how we support families for everything that comes afterwards.Kind regards,
