HARLOW Council leader, Mark Wilkinson has expressed his anger at the sudden closure of the Maypole Club.
Councillor Wilkinson said: “We are extremely concerned about the sudden closure of this facility and about the impact that it will have on local groups and members of the club.
Whilst this is a private matter between the former leaseholder and the freehold owner, Newhall Projects, the Council has contacted Newhall Projects to try to find out more details of why such sudden action has been taken and what proposals there are for the members of the club who have paid membership fees and the groups that use the facilities. We are also working with the football leagues to support the local football clubs who will be affected.
“I can see no reason why the club and facilities should close immediately. The land has been designated as part of the Enterprise Zone but the development of this land is some way off so the closure now is both unexpected and somewhat premature and the plan was always that the club would be relocated.”
