HARLOW Hawks hit the summit in division two of the Herts Basketball League after securing a 58-51 victory against fellow promotion-chasers North Herts Knights in their first home game in a month.
Knights brought a strong team to the Leisurezone for this match.
The first quarter started slowly for the Hawks who scored only six points in the first five minutes, with Knights close behind on 5 points.
For the remainder of the first quarter, Hawks notched up a gear and strung together 11 points with very little reply from the Knights who were on the back foot this quarter.
Points came from Tom White, Russ Allan, Craig Lovett and Sam Kmita, but it was Roan Lenihan with a big three pointer in the last minute to end the quarter with Hawks leading 17-9.
The second quarter was a more balanced affair with the Knights trading baskets with Hawks and slowly reducing the deficit.
White had a storming game, scoring in each quarter and making use of the mis-matches inside.
Although a quiet quarter for the Hawks they maintained their lead going into the second half and were up 28-21.
The Hawks’ third quarter was their most impressive, scoring 18 points and the distribution of points came from across the team.
This was Sam Kmita’s quarter by far, scoring 10 of the 18 points.
A number of them came from steals and a tough defence from Hawks who kept the pressure on the Knights throughout, shutting down key opposition players, most notably from Lee Jones.
White, Allan, Jones and Rimantas Norkeliunas were the other scorers this quarter but Kmita took the plaudits for keeping Hawks on top (46-38).
Harlow’s defence was too much for the Knights and Hawks kept the lead throughout the game.
Knights managed to close the gap to four points shortly after the midway point of the quarter but Hawks managed to claw back the initiative.
Knights were unable to reply late in the quarter and Hawks were able to close out the game for another deserved victory.
Points came from Lee Morris, Jones, White and Lenihan as Hawks sealed the 58-51 victory, topping the table for the first time this season.
HARLOW HAWKS: Kmita 16 points, White 12, Lenihan 9, Allan 6, Norkeliunas 4, Stonehouse 4, Lovett 4, Morris 2, Whytock 1, Adnan and Martin.
