Dementia roadshow coming to Harlow

News / Mon 17th Mar 2014 at 12:44pm

LAST year Essex County Council in partnership with North Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust completed a research pilot looking at ways to delay the onset of Dementia in people with mild cognitive impairment. The research suggested that there were activities which if adopted could help to delay the onset of Dementia. These fall into three main categories:

1. Brain training activities (such as suduko, crosswords)

2. Group learning activities (such as singing, playing music, origami)

3. Physical Activity (such as walking, swimming, aerobics)

The campaign will once again see the ‘Dementia Cube’ out and about with it travelling to Chelmsford, Harlow, Basildon and Colchester.

Visitors will be able to try some brain training exercises, write on our memory wall and speak to colleagues/partners from the Alzheimer’s Society and the NHS, who are key supporters of the campaign and will be on hand to offer expert advice and guidance.

Cabinet Member for Adults Social Care, Cllr John Aldridge, said: “It is great that we are rolling this campaign out again, it is vital that we get these important messages out there. Everyone in Essex is affected in some way by Dementia – whether they are affected themselves, care for someone with Dementia or have a relative or friend who has the disease.

“Whilst there is currently no cure there are activities and techniques such as brain training activities, physical activity and group learning activities that residents can adopt to delay and slow the onset of the disease.

“I would ask for the people of Essex to make these activities part of everyday life – they don’t take much time and can easily slot into a daily routine. Anyone wanting any more information should visit one of the roadshows where they can have a go on the brain training games and speak to one of our experts.”

The dates of the roadshows are below. Experts will be on hand between 10am and 4pm.

Monday 17th March, High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford

Tuesday 18th March, Harvey Centre, Harlow

Wednesday 19th March, Eastgate Centre, Basildon

Thursday 20th March, Lions Walk, Colchester
