Reception pupils at Freshwaters Primary Academy, in School Lane, invited their parents in to school for their first day to enjoy lunch together.
The 45 children, now entitled to free school meals along with Years 1 and 2 under the Government’s universal infant free school meal initiative, enjoyed a two-course meal with their families.
The menu included local butcher’s premium sausages with mashed potato and vegetables or salad, followed by a choice of chocolate marble cake, fresh fruit or yoghurt.
Amanda Forrow, school business manager, said: “It was fantastic to see so many parents have the opportunity to share their child’s first experience of a school meal.
“We hope this gave parents an insight into the expectation pupils become independent at lunchtime; carrying their own tray and using a knife and fork correctly are essential skills pupils need to learn.”
