Athletics: Jephcott’s display some Yorkshire grit

HARLOW Running Club members were out and about in force last weekend, achieving two club records, two Essex Championship medals and several personal best times (PB).

At the Yorkshire Marathon held at York Jamie Jephcott finished in 504th place out of 3675 finishers in a superb 3hrs 29min 01sec and son Daniel was 1868th in an excellent 4hrs 11min 55sec which is a PB by an incredible 30min and a new HRC Under 20 record.

Meanwhile at the Essex 10 Mile Championships held at Tiptree Steve Murtagh finished in 11th place out of 393 finishers and 2nd Vet 50, to earn him the silver medal in his age category, in a fantastic 57min 45sec which is also a new HRC Vet 50 record. He was followed home by John Tennant 87th and 3rd Vet 60 to earn him the bronze medal in his age category in 1hr 10min 55sec. Also running were Colin Moody 138th in 1hr 16min 21sec, Janice Page 188th in 1hr 20min 34sec(PB), Robin Lozeau 212th in 1hr 23min 47sec and Vicky Calver 329th in 1hr 37min 47sec, a PB by over 20min.

At the multi-terrain Ware 10 Mile race Alex Smith finished in 24th place out of 240 finishers in a superb 1hr 10min 08sec (PB). He was followed by Jason Haigh 26th in 1hr 10min 23sec, John Bull 53rd in 1hr 15sec 22sec, Sandra Rust 67th in 1hr 17min 41sec (PB), Jamie Luck 78th in 1hr 18min 47sec, Peter Ayling 85th in 1hr 19min 45sec, Vicky Steadman 87th in 1hr 19min 53sec, Alan Cootes 90th in 1hr 20min 04sec, Lyndsey Hodge 129th in 1hr 26min 11sec, Debbie Smith 137th in 1hr 27min 59sec (PB), Celia Haigh 147th in 1hr 29min 04sec (PB), Debbie Barry 159th in 1hr 31min 42sec and Jane Evans 191st in 1hr 36min 39sec both in their debut at the distance, Joy Hale 209th in 1hr 40min 00sec and Karen Moir 210th in 1hr 40min 01sec.

At the Great Eastern Run Half Marathon held at Peterborough Brendon Maclean finished in 746th place out of 3787 finishers in 1hr 38min 49sec, followed by Andy Ramage 1088th in 1hr 46min 03sec and Holly Nairn 2123rd in 1hr 58min 19sec, all were personal best times for the distance.

At the Royal Parks Half Marathon, running through St Jame’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, Lyndon Cooper finished in 43rd place out of 14,718 finishers in an excellent 1hr 20min 51sec.

At the first race of the Metropolitan Cross Country League held on a hilly 5 mile course at Claybury Park in Woodford Peter Brewin finished in 243rd place out of 417 finishers in 33min 30sec. He was followed home by Rick Ricketts 295th in 35min 18sec, Mark Hayward 352nd in 38min 08sec and Martin McColgan 394th in 42min 48sec.

At the Gunpowder Parkrun 5K at Waltham Abbey John Bull finished in 20th place out of 108 finishers in 21min 46sec followed by Pushpa Mistry 79th in 30min 15sec.

At the second of three Hatfield Midweek 5K series of races John Tennant finished in 54th place out of 122 finishers and 3rd Vet 60 in 20min 23sec.
