WEST Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging people to use their pharmacies in support of NHS England’s ‘Feeling under the weather campaign’.

Protecting against seasonal illness, making healthy choices and choosing the right service for your needs is very important, particularly in winter.

Your pharmacy should also be the first point of contact for all minor ailments such as coughs, colds, minor cuts and bruises, aches and pains, nappy rash and teething. They can also offer helpful, immediate advice without individuals needing to visit their GP. Should an individual need to visit their GP, the pharmacist will advise them of this.

Getting the flu vaccine as soon as possible as soon as possible is also key this winter. Free flu jabs are available to everyone aged 65 or over, everyone under 65 with an increased risk of flu (ask your GP if you are unsure), all pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, all two, three and four-year-old children, everyone who cares for an older or disabled person, household contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised and frontline health and social care workers.

If individuals are not eligible for a free flu jab, they can purchase one from their local pharmacist.

Anurita Rohilla, WECCG Chief Pharmacist, said: “Pharmacists can play an important part in helping people stay healthy, throughout the year, and particularly throughout winter.

During the winter months, there is normally an increase in minor ailments that can often be dealt with over-the counter medication. They can offer friendly, confidential advice and are available without the need to book an appointment.

Pharmacists can also help people better self-manage illnesses, particularly those more common in winter, and can advise them how to take more responsibility for their own health and wellbeing to prevent symptoms getting worse.”

Over the next few months, West Essex CCG will continue to promote the importance of self-care over winter.
