Would you like to help the homeless this Christmas ?

News / Mon 17th Nov 2014 at 06:36pm

BEING homeless is especially hard at Christmas. For almost 20 years the Harlow Christmas Haven has provided a shelter for the homeless at Christmas. We provide simple accommodation and food in a warm, friendly and safe environment. The number of guests varies, but we can have up to 30 people staying overnight with us. The Haven is open from 23rd December 2014 to 1st January 2015.

How You Can Help?

We need volunteers who are willing to give up some of their time over Christmas. Cooks, cleaners and washers‐up are all welcome, as are those who simply sit and chat with our guests.

If you are interested please do come along to our Volunteer’s Evening, where we will explain what volunteering involves, and answer any questions. It’s on Thursday 27th November at 7pm in the Playbarn, Great Parndon Community Association, Abercrombie Way, Harlow, CM18 6YJ. We welcome both new and experienced volunteers.

We run 5 shifts a day, covering 24/7, and aim to have 5 or 6 volunteers on each shift. You’re welcome to do as many, or as few, shifts as you want. Without our volunteers, the Christmas Haven simply could not happen.

If you have any questions, or if you are interested but cannot make the meeting, then please do not hesitate to contact The Chocolate Run Chair, Jo Busson, on 07951 612803, or email [email protected] or visit www.chocolaterun.org.uk

Gifts Are Always Welcome

The Haven relies on the support of local people, organisations and companies. We don’t receive any government or lottery grants. We always welcome gifts for our guests, such as thermos flasks, sleeping bags and sleeping mats.

This year we are also asking local companies to consider asking their staff to collect gifts for our guests as an alternative to exchanging Christmas cards. Please do get in touch if we can tell you more.
