Hockey: Harlow draw strength from Wapping

TREMENDOUS spirit was shown by Harlow Ladies as they fought back from 2-1 down before being denied maximum points against high-flying Wapping fourths.

A victory for the Londoners would have left them below second-placed Southend, so this point is a huge tonic for Alex Figg’s side.

Both teams started strongly with Harlow having more of the possession.

However, it was Wapping who broke the deadlock, the ball being whacked up the pitch by a defender resulting in a goal.

Harlow levelled after some good link-up play and accurate passing enabled Steffie Hawes to slot the ball past the Wapping keeper.

A positive half-time team talk set out the strategy for the second half, where Harlow had some good team play but were unlucky not to convert this into any goals.

But the visitors were stung when Wapping went back in front

Undeterred, midfielder Bethan Spencer’s decisive tackle set up an equaliser, as winger Charlotte Byers cracked the ball into the net.

Wapping dominated once more and took a 3-2 lead when the ball unluckily came off of a defender’s foot very close to the goal line.

Not dispirited, Harlow’s player of the match Petra Trimble ably thwarted a couple of strong Wapping chances before she turned defence into attack, setting up Hawes for her second goal.

Keeper Laura Hay made a last- minute dive across her goal to deny the hosts a late winner.

This Saturday Harlow host Old Loughtonians.

HARLOW LADIES (squad): Hay, Chambers, Figg, Shearman, Trimble, Welsford, Tweddle, Spencer, Esterheuysen-Smith, Hawes, Castle, Turner, Byers, Ferdinando.
