POLICE investigating a number of burglaries in Harlow have today appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The first happened at a flat in Alexandra Road, Newhall, on Saturday, January 24 sometime between 8.40am and 5.10pm. The letter box cover was removed from the front door and somebody tried to get inside without success. A witness saw two white men near the property at around 1.30pm that day. One was taller than the other and was wearing Caterpillar style work boots and had a thick beard. The shorter man walked with a distinctive sway.

The second burglary happened at a house in Hare Street. This occurred sometime between 9am on Friday, January 23 and 7.35pm on Sunday, January 25. Thieves broke in by smashing a rear patio door and stole a distinctive Fortnum and Mason box containing a number of items of jewellery. Other items such as champagne glasses and a bag of birthday gifts including coconut body gel were also taken as well as a large sum of cash.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area over that weekend or if they have been offered any of the stolen items for sale.

The third burglary happened at a house in Tysea Close sometime between 11am and 6.45pm on Sunday, February 1. A number of windows and doors at the rear of the house were smashed including a set of patio doors. Money and jewellery worth several thousand pounds were stolen from the property.

Investigating officer Pc Jo Snell said: “Our house to house enquiries have led us to believe that two men were paying particular attention to the victim’s car which was parked on the driveway. This was at around 2.30pm on the Sunday. There would have been a lot of noise coming from the garden because as well as smashing the windows and patio doors, seven security lights dotted around the garden were also smashed.”

Anybody that can help or who has any other information about the burglaries is asked to contact Pc Jo Snell at Harlow CID on 101. People can also give information to the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through their Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
