BMA ChefTWO Year 11 students at Burnt Mill Academy competed against eight others from across Essex and Hertfordshire in the FutureChef catering contest.

Amy Croucher and Connor Dollard took part in the competition which gives teenagers direct access to chefs and industry experts.

The local finals were held at Passmores Acadey and participants were challenged to produce a two-course meal for two, with a budget of £7 and within 90 minutes.

Amy was named the runner-up for her fish goujons followed by chocolate mousse and shortbread.

Donna Walsh, head of art, design and technology, said: “The pressure was really on these students as the judges were three professional chefs who walked around the room while they were preparing their dishes.

“They had to work completely independently; I was not even allowed in the same room as them.

“Both students want to pursue careers in food and so this was an ideal opportunity for them to get advice and guidance from professional chefs.

“This event gave them confidence in their abilities and taught them how to cope under pressure.”

Burnt Mill students are also given the opportunity to improve their food knowledge and cooking skills by attending the ten-week Junior Chef Academy at Hertford Regional College.
