Thornwood Car ParkPART of the car park at Thornwood Village Hall has been resurfaced thanks to a grant from Essex County Council.

North Weald Bassett Parish Council received £17,866 from the county council’s Community Initiatives Fund towards the surfacing of the remaining part of the car park which had never been tarmaced.

The other part of the car park was surfaced 15 years ago but funds had not been available to surface the remainder.

The hall, in Weald Hall Lane, is an integral part of village life for local residents and the new surface will give a safer access to the hall, the playing field, childrens’ play area and allotments and should alleviate on-road parking.

Parish councillor and Parish Hall chairman Dick Spearman said the surfacing will make a huge difference to users of the hall.

Among those attending the ribbon-cutting on Friday were North Weald Parish Council chairman Cyril Hawkins, Essex County Council leader David Finch, Essex County Council cabinet member Roger Hirst, Epping Forest District Council chairman Tony Boyce, North Weald county councillor Anthony Jackson and Epping Forest District Council leader Chris Whitbread along with local residents.
