Review: Toni hits the perfect note as Karen Carpenter

Harlow Playhouse / Sat 25th Apr 2015 at 10:51am

By Jill T Aylott

THE MULTI-tonal voice of the legendary and tragic Karen Carpenter may be one of the hardest to pay tribute to.

Toni Lee in the show, We’ve Only Just Begun produces what can only be described as a mesmeric performance in a wonderfully entertaining show at the Harlow Playhouse.

But it is important to stress that it is not all about Toni. She is greatly aided by a wonderful backing band that have decades of experience in order to enhance Toni’s delivery.

The show also has the hallmarks of the best shows when they tell the story of the artist using visual aids of the artist.

The highlights have to be Solitaire, Yesterday Once More and of course Close to You.

But Toni brings such empathy and warmth to the show that it was no wonder that the performance at the Harlow Playhouse was packed out.
