The Borrowers Again“>The BorrowersSHOCKED children arrived back in class to find The Borrowers had moved in to their school.

An emergency whole school assembly was quickly organised and each pupil at Little Parndon Primary School, in Park Mead, Harlow, ushered in in stunned silence.

Head of school Sophie Laing explained an area of the school hall had been cordoned off after members of the breakfast club had made the discovery.

A tiny door, footprints and miniature belongings – including door keys, a skipping rope and toy car, plus a makeshift room complete with table, chairs and lamp – were all found first thing on day one of the new term.

Mrs Laing told the intrigued children: “A tiny note had been left on my desk along with a video message we have been asked to watch.”

The children, along with their teachers, then watched a short message filmed by the father of The Borrowers family appealing for help in replacing items lost when they fled their last home.
The eventful day was a way of getting the children excited for their programme of work ahead – with plans to use the discovery to inspire story and report writing, art and maths in the coming days and weeks.

Children watched films including The Borrowers and Honey, I Shrunk The Kids before the summer break to get them thinking about life as a small person in a giant world.

Mrs Laing said: “It is so important to capture the children’s imaginations and inspire their school work. We plan to start every new topic this year with an exciting experience for them to reflect on and use back in the classrooms.”

Helena Mills, head of BMAT schools, attended the assembly and said: “What a great message this gives to our young children, to welcome new people into our world and to take good care of them.”
