Follow Clare the Bear at the Hospice 10K

ST Clare Hospice is holding its annual 10k race on Sunday, April 10. This popular sporting event has been a fixture in local running club calendars for over twenty years and last year raised £8,000 for the Hospice – a target which St Clare is hoping to beat this year!

One person tackling the 10k route on the roads of Hastingwood is seasoned St Clare Hospice marathon runner, Andy Kitson, a mathematics teacher from Leventhorpe School in Sawbridgeworth.

Andy has run numerous races for St Clare, including the London marathon, but is pushing himself to the limit by dressing up and running the 10k event as the Hospice mascot, Clare Bear!

Athletic Andy says he decided to start running in the Bear suit as he “wanted a different challenge to the pursuit of another personal best.”

Andy has raised thousands of pounds for St Clare since he began running for the Hospice in 2013 and is motivated by his personal experience of the charity. Andy’s mother-in-law was cared for by St Clare before she passed away in October 2010.

Running in the heavy Bear suit certainly has its difficulties but Andy has some experience of this; having recently completed the Great South Run dressed as the mascot. Andy can also be regularly spotted on training runs around his hometown of Harlow dressed as Clare Bear, so cheer if you see him!

Hundreds of runners are expected to join Andy at the St Clare Hospice 10K race. Starting and finishing at the Hospice, this event is suitable for all abilities – whether new to running, or a regular club runner looking for a new PB. The course is also suitable for wheelchair athletes.

The race is timed and trophies will be up for grabs in the following categories: male, female, seniors, juniors and wheelchair athletes. Medals will be awarded to all runners.

Advance registration costs £12 or £15 on the day (£10 or £13 for affiliated runners). The deadline for advanced sign-ups is Monday, April 4. The registration desk will be open at 9:30am on the day, with the race starting at 10:30am. The event is open to people aged 15 and above.
