The Challenge took place at the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome near Maldon, Essex, which is currently developing a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) centre.

Organised by ADS Group, UK trade organisation for space and aerospace industries, the UK’s largest youth model rocket competition is now in its tenth year.

Ten Essex schools had taken part in the regional final on April 23, won by Shenfield High School, with six of these schools – more than any other county – making it through to the national finals last Wednesday.

The annual competition is supported by the Essex Employment and Skills Board’s Education and Industry STEM programme.

The programme supports 30 schools to develop skilled young people ready for industry in priority skills sectors such as advanced manufacturing and engineering.

The Challenge is also backed by a number of local businesses including Gardner Aerospace, Leonardo (formerly Selex ES) and Wickham Engineering which offer mentoring to the teams, with Challenger Solutions and Shakespeare Engineering contributing competition resources.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Partnerships, Essex County Council said: “I am delighted to see such a large number of Essex schools and businesses getting involved in this challenge and so many of our schools reaching the national finals. Working together, our schools and businesses can ensure that we have the skills we need to secure future economic growth and show that Essex Means Business.”
