Harlow role model Anne wins top TV award

anna-strikeANNE Wafula Strike MBE has been named a Winner for the Play for Change Award in TV Sports Awards 2016. The Play for Change award recognises her as a top-class athlete who is responsible for extraordinary work with AbleChildAfrica and the Olympia-Wafula Foundation, supporting, funding and advocating worthy campaigns, initiatives and projects for disabled and other vulnerable children through sports.

Supported by SPORTEL, the ceremony coincides with the annual SPORTEL Monaco convention, featuring an array of sporting legends as well as high-profile guests from the world of sport, entertainment and media, including Mario Cipollini, one of the most successful cyclists of all time; the renowned football coach Fabio Capello, who has had a fantastic and influential career; Flavio Briatore, Formula One manager and successful global entrepreneur; and Spanish TV presenter Laura Barriales.
Anne Wafula Strike accepted her award at a ceremony at The Fairmont Hotel in Monaco on 24th October 2016 where she had the opportunity to deliver an acceptance speech. A full list of TV Sports Awards nominees/winners can be found at http://www.tvsportsawards.org/nominees//

“I’m honoured to accept this award as a Paralympian, especially on World Polio Day as a polio survivor. I would like to dedicate this award to the children at AbleChildAfrica and the Olympia-Wafula Foundation.”

Anne Wafula Strike MBE was born and raised in Kenya, and struck down by polio when she was two years old. She therefore has a deep connection to the work of

AbleChildAfrica, the leading charity for disabled children in Africa for whom she is Patron, and her own Olympia-Wafula Foundation, which empowers the disabled and disadvantaged through social inclusion.

Athlete, author, and sporting ambassador, Anne inspires achievement and excellence across a broad range of life situations. 2004 marked the beginning of an Olympic career for Anne when she became the first wheelchair racer from East Africa to compete at the Paralympics in Athens. Anne joined Team GB and in 2007 and carried the official Paralympic Flame in London 2012.

Anne is terrific. A credit to herself and someone we in Harlow should be immensely proud of. She deserves every award going! Congratulations Anne!
