Athletics: Twenty is plenty for Harlow runners

SEVERAL Harlow Running Club members took part in the Essex 20 Mile Road Race
Championships as part of their Spring Marathon training schedule. The race was
held at Langham, near Colchester, over a challenging three lap course which
contained two major climbs on each lap.

There were six personal best times for the distance (PB) but pride of place goes to Carinne Jay in what was her debut
at the distance. She collected the Essex Bronze Medal in the Female Vet 45
category when finishing in 191st place out of 417 finishers in 2hrs 39min 33sec
which is also a new Female Vet 50 Club Record, last set in 1996. Jay also
combined with Sharon Wright 121st in 2.25.49 (PB) and Julia Gardiner 183rd in
2.38.05 to win the the Ladies Team Essex Bronze Medal. First home for HRC was
Alex Smith in 80th place in an excellent 2.16.27 (PB). He was followed by Adrian
Fell 125th in 2.26.23 (PB), Jason Haigh 135th in 2.27.58, Darren Tiley 148th in
2.30.44 (PB by 20min), Brendon MacLean 149th in 2.30.45, Martyn Coulter 158th in
2.32.19 (PB), Colin Moody 210th in 2.43.56, Jamie Jephcott 240th in 2.52.17,
Sandi Rust 242nd in 2.53.03, Kerry Mavris 270th in 2.58.00 (PB by a fantastic
51min), Sam Carter 287th in 3.01.41 (debut), Debbie Barry 296th in 3.03.18 and
Martin Elven 369th in 3.21.17 (debut).

Meanwhile at the Milton Keynes 20 Mile Road Race Faith Jackson-Lee, in her debut
at the distance, finished in 317th place out of 819 finishers in 2hrs 52min

At the Cambridge Half Marathon Celia Haigh finished in 1483rd place out of 6887
finishers in a PB time of 1hr 42min 56sec. She was followed by Vicky Steadman
1652nd in 1.43.19, Sean Flynn 1721st in 1.43.52 and Paula Coleman 4471st in
2.03.42 (PB).

At the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park 10K Peter Ayling finished in 126th place out
of 446 finishers in 50min 20sec and Andy Kinney was 304th in 60.53.

Many runners completed parkruns on Saturday morning.
At Hackney Marshes Rob Lowe finished in 3rd place out of 264 finishers in a
17min 25sec.

At Luton Ben Chitiyo finished in 12th place in 20min 38sec.

At Hatfield Forest Owen Haigh finished in 3rd place out of 224 finishers in
19min 14sec, Alan Broughton was 15th in 21.48, Martin McColgan 37th in 24.24 and
Justin Patten 41st in 24.39.

At Edmonton Danny McCree finished in 5th place out of 69 finishers in 19min
45sec, Graham Saville was 21st in 23.27 and Spencer Brooks 22nd in 23.30.

At Harlow Terry Ridge finished in 10th place out of 154 finishers in 22min
08sec. He was followed home by Catheridge Ridge 16th in 22.59, Martin Westley
20th in 23.09 (PB), Viola Tam 34th in 24.49, Louise Cootes 41st in 26.00, Alan
Cootes 42nd in 26.01, Jim Bates 47th in 26.36, Holly Nairn 49th in 26.55,
Lorraine Teale 111th in 35.12 (PB), and Andrew Kitson 136th in 39.54.

At Waltham Abbey Jamie Luck finished in 20th place out of 162 finishers in 22min

At Long Eaton in Derbyshire Debbie Smith finished in 145th place out of 424
finishers in a PB time of 25min 41sec.

At Wanstead Flats Robin Lozeau finished in 65th place out of 172 finishers in
25min 59sec and Alan Wellbelove was 95th in 27.46.

At Hertford Jane Evans finished in 130th place out of 260 finishers in 28min
16sec and Peter Mills was 164th in 29.34.

At the Punchbowl Ultra 30 Miler, an off-road race following part of the North
Downs Way in Surrey, Darren Coates and Hannah Cox finished together in 96th
place in 8hrs.
