Harlow is 70 – schools competition celebrating the town’s cultural history and the future

HARLOW COUNCIL, in partnership with The Harvey Centre and Harlow Art Trust, is inviting local schools to participate in providing a piece of creative work to be included in an exhibition in the Gibberd Gallery as part of Harlow is 70.

We would like to encourage children, young people and students to think about Harlow, its history and how they imagine the town’s future.

Harlow was first designated a new town on 25 March 1947 and in its 70-year history has seen some important firsts: it was the site for the country’s first residential tower block (The Lawn, built in 1951), the first pedestrianised shopping precinct (Broad Walk), it is the birthplace of fibre optic communications and is the only town in the UK and possibly the world to be known as a Sculpture Town.

We are encouraging submissions from schools, children and young people across Harlow to submit a piece in the form of:

· Writing – poetry, story, play
· Art – Painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, sculpture
· Performance – dance, play, song

The closing date of submissions will be Friday 30 June 2017. Pieces will be selected for display in the Hideaway Gallery (a designated space in the Gibberd Gallery that promotes the creative work of young local talent).

The exhibition will open on Friday 14 July 2017 for the public to view the work submitted. At the same time there will be a vote for a selection of winning pieces to go into the town’s time capsule, which is being organised by The Harvey Centre during July 2017.
