HARLOW Judo Club took 3 players to UEL, Docklands, to compete in the 4 mat area in the London Open 2017. This is a very high ranking event with players coming from all over the UK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and even from Holland to compete. The standard of Judo was therefore going to be high and everyone who attended, was not disappointed. The three boys all competed in the Minors group (age 8 to 11).

George Franks (10) fought first in his weight group. Unfortunately having tried hard, he was unable to progress any further than the compound knockout stage and after another fight, was knocked out of the competition. Next up was Sam Cobbin-Brown (10) who battled hard in his weight group and after losing his first fight, also dropped down to the compound knockouts. He, like George, also failed to win his next fight and was also eliminated from any further fights and unable to medal.

Last up was Owen Lambert (11). This is his last year in the Minors category where he will automatically move up to the Pre-Cadets section (age 12 to 14). He won all his fights via Ippon (maximum score) to dominate his own weight group to take the Gold medal and beating the 2017 British Schools Champion in the final.

Coach Mick Ellis said “I am very pleased with the team’s performance today – they all fought very well and listened to my instructions despite all the noise”.

The Club caters for those with special needs and has a Coach specifically for this area. Please contact the Club for more details. They are based in Foldcroft, Harlow, CM20 1SE.
