Housebuilder gives much-loved Harlow charity a boost

A CHARITY raising cash to help teach people with Down’s Syndrome how to swim has been handed a £1,000 boost.

Harlow-based Upwards with Downs is a small charity which provides help and support to people with Down’s Syndrome living in Essex, Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas.

The group is currently looking to provide members with one-to-one swimming lessons – and Persimmon Homes Essex has stumped up £1,000 to help.

Peggy Slade, of Upwards with Downs, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this generous donation from Persimmon Homes.

“We provide our members with regular meetings and events which the whole family can enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere.

“We are currently raising funds for one-to-one swimming lessons. People with Down’s Syndrome cannot learn as quickly as someone without Down’s Syndrome.

“Due to their poor concentration skills and their inability to follow instructions when in a crowd, our members would not progress as well in the regular swimming lessons.

“In a one-to-one setting the person can learn at a pace which suits them.”

Peggy said that children with Down’s Syndrome often have poor concentration so to learn to swim will not only keep them safe around water but also improve their self confidence.

The donation comes as part of Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme. Every month each of the company’s 29 regional businesses – including the Witham-based company – gives away up to £2,000 to good causes in their vicinity.

The housebuilder has donated more than £1million to good causes since the launch of the scheme in 2015.

Emma Hawkins, head of sales at Persimmon Homes Essex, said: “We’re delighted to back Upwards with Downs with this £1,000 donation.

“The charity does fantastic work supporting people in the area with Down’s Syndrome. I’m sure their members will thoroughly enjoy these swimming lessons and get a lot out of them.”
