THE community has been rocked by the death of much-loved and respected Harlow Council environmentalist, Darren Fazackerley, who has died after a short illness.

Darren was known to many for his work at Harlow Council and many of its green projects.

Leader of Harlow Council, Councillor Jon Clempner said: “Colleagues across the Council were shocked and saddened to hear of Darren’s passing. He worked for the Council for 23 years and he was widely known by many environmental community groups and volunteers who help to maintain the town.

“Darren was instrumental in Harlow achieving its first ever Green Flag award at Parndon Wood Nature Reserve in 2009, an accolade that the reserve has held on to for eight years in a row. This achievement, along with the Town Park getting its first award last year, was something which he was extremely proud of and rightly so. He also loved running and keeping fit and was part of the Council team that supported Parkrun to successful set up in the Town Park. He took part in many events outside of work to raise money for charity.

“Our thoughts at this time are with Darren’s family and all those who knew him. His contribution to the town, commitment to the Council and support he gave to local groups will be sorely missed.”

Tributes have also poured in from the Harlow parkrun community. Darren was instrumental in the development of the parkrun, a course that has been praised by runners the length and breadth of the country.

Course director, Vicky Calver said: “Darren was so keen to see the parkrun started in Harlow. He helped so much with making sure the park and route was ready and well maintained.

“He knew the importance of keeping the grass cut and trees trimmed back, drains unblocked and leaves swept off the cycle track regularly. For instance, I have chains and padlocks missing for the gates and I would have emailed him to sort. It was all the little things but without him, it wouldn’t have been done nearly as promptly”.

We will all miss you Darren but your legacy will live on.
