Home Counties Split Grade & The Don Werner Memorial Championships – High Wycombe

SIX young players from Harlow Judo Club travelled to High Wycombe to compete in the Northern Home Counties Split Grade & The Don Werner Memorial Championships event held at High Wycombe. The competition was split into 3 sections – Red Belts, Yellow & Orange Belts and Green, Blue & Brown Belts. The Club had 3 players compete in the Red Belt Section and 3 players in the Yellow & Orange Belt Section.

Sofia Kafas (9), the only girl player from the Club, fought first in the Red Belt section. She fought very well in her first competition since injuring her shoulder and secured a Silver medal. George Franks (10) and Sam Cobbin-Brown (10) were next also in the Red Belt section. With Head Coach Mick Ellis coaching them between the 2 mats, George won all 5 of his fights in great style and took the Gold whilst Sam, despite battling hard, lost one of his fights to take the Silver.

Owen Lambert (11), Fionn Healy (11) and Giacomo Misuraca (14) all competed in the Yellow & Orange Belt Section. Owen dominated his weight group with excellent ground work to take the Gold. Fionn worked exceptionally well but was unable to medal higher than a respectable Bronze medal. Last up was Giacomo who took the third Gold medal for the Club, taking on players up to 2 weight groups heavier than himself as there were no other competitors in his own weight group. He fought valiantly against the others and showed great judo techniques.

Head Coach Mick Ellis said “Overall, I am very pleased with the team’s performance today – they all fought very well, listened to my instructions and end of the day, they did all the hard work to secure their medals. “

The Club caters for those with special needs and has a Coach specifically for this area. Please contact the Club for more details. They are based in Foldcroft, Harlow, CM20 1SE.
