STEWARDS Academy welcomed Anne Wafula Strike MBE as our guest speaker for the annual Sports Motivation Day. Anne is a Paralympic Wheelchair racer and an Ambassador for ‘Play for Change’, a charity that supports those less fortunate to engage in sport.

Anne spoke to all students and offered an inspirational talk about her background, how to work hard and to be resilient through tough times. To help raise money for three charities, ‘Play for Change’, ‘Aysanew Kassa Trust’ and ‘Petals’, all students came in non-uniform and a number also participated in some sporting activities.

Gareth Hughes, PE teacher and event coordinator, said: “Anne has completed an array of challenges in her life, all proving that you should never give up and that hard work most certainly pays off. It was incredible to have her in for the day, and we are very grateful of her time.”

A number of students commented on Anne’s presentation:

“It was all very interesting and has made me think that I have got to work harder than I already am in all of my subjects.”

“The assembly was very inspirational and has taught me that if I want to do something I need the right frame of mind and to be resilient.”

“Anne was a very inspirational woman that had been awarded an MBE and had won many medals from various events. She explained her own personal story amazingly and how her disability didn’t affect her badly, but boosted her confidence and perseverance.”
