Review: The Carpenters Story at the Harlow Playhouse

WE were told that Claire Furley’s vocals would be stunning and they were right. It isn’t the most accurate Karen Carpenter impression but that doesn’t seem to matter as it is the spirit, energy and warmth of her singing and her overall performance that evoked the spirit of the tragic singer that gave so much pleasure since her heyday of the seventies.

She is supported by a cracking band that are really tuned into the needs of the different songs. They are not that easy to play or should we say, easy to play well but this was a very good band.

Despite the sad demise of Karen Carpenter, there is a lovely feel to the music and the spirit of The Carpenters that this production translates. This is boosted by the lavish arrangements.

There is clever use of the video at the back and that is where you are drawn into the dreamy bewitching of Claire Furley’s performance.

This is a gentle celebration of the music of The Carpenters.
