YOUNG people in Harlow are encouraged to sign up for this autumn’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme.

The world’s leading youth achievement award, run by Essex County Council’s Youth Service, provides young people aged 13 to 25 with the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills, and a chance to take part in an adventurous expedition in outdoor activities.

The latest programme starts in November and young people will have the opportunity to complete one of three progressive awards – bronze, silver or gold.

Councillor Ray Gooding, cabinet member for education, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards give young people the opportunity to take on challenges that are truly life-changing.

“It supports their transition into adulthood by teaching them important life skills, as well as building their confidence and developing their mental and physical perseverance, resilience and initiative.

“I would encourage anyone who is interested to find out more or, better still, get registered.”

Essex Youth Service also runs the award itself from eight youth centres across the county. They are running information sessions in youth centres at Braintree, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Colchester, Hadleigh and Harlow.
