Stewards Half

STEWARDS Academy welcomed Robert Halfon MP to find out more about the exciting STEM (Science Technology, Engineering & Maths) opportunities available to our students. This is one of the key areas that Stewards, a Science Specialist, promotes through a range of activities and clubs such as; Quadcopter Challenge supported by Raytheon, Youth Rocketry Challenge, Faraday Challenge, Stewards Science Journalist Group and Raspberry Pi to name just a few. Students were also able to share with Mr Halfon the many regional and national trophies in STEM related competitions they have won.

A wide range of students from years 7 to 11 spoke about their STEM experiences and explained how STEM activities at school had not only improved their skills in areas such as team work, soldering, computer programming and graphic design but had also opened their eyes to the wide range of careers, degree courses and technical apprenticeships open to them in the future.

Mr Halfon met key staff and governors who have a wealth of expertise in STEM related industries and met Chloe Johnson from Transport for London. Chloe, a former student at Stewards who is currently an apprentice at TFL, spoke to pupils about technical apprenticeships and how her apprenticeship had changed her life and given her great opportunities including working on Cross Rail.

Assistant Head teacher & Head of Science Russell Perrin said: “It was brilliant to see such a huge number of students speak so eloquently about their chosen subjects. As teachers it is our business to inspire the next generation and advance the cause of thinking; listening to these students it appears business is booming.”

Mr Halfon said: “You think about the UK’s Skill deficit and then you visit a great school like Stewards Academy to meet STEM specialist students and an apprentice winning national awards. After seeing awards for top STEM achievements by Stewards students you realise the future of the UK Skills Revolution is perhaps a very good one after all.”
